Financial Assistance

State Programs

If you live in Massachusetts, you may be able to get health insurance or help paying your health care bills through a state program like MassHealth, the Health Connector, or Health Safety Net. Each program has different rules and income limits.

If you have medical bills because you do not have insurance, or because your health insurance did not cover your care, you may qualify for a discount. A paper application along with supporting documentation may be required. Patients are required to apply for any available State Programs before being considered for Financial Assistance. There are three types of discounts:

  1. If your bills are for an emergency or other medically necessary services and your household income is below 301% of the Federal Poverty Guide, you may qualify for a discount ranging from 70 to 100% for acute care if you do not qualify for any state programs. Your qualifications and amount of discount depends on the type of care provided and your individual circumstances including your household income.

  2. If your bills are from Spaulding Rehabilitation Network or McLean Hospital, then you may be able to get a 60% to 100% discount if you do not qualify for any state programs. In most cases, this determination is made prior to your receiving care at those facilities. The discount amount will depend on your household income.*

  3. You may get a 25% discount on any medical bills if you pay (or set up a payment plan) within 2 months of the date on your first bill. This does not apply to bills from Spaulding Rehabilitation Network or McLean Hospital.
Important: Many health care bills are for co-payments, co-insurance, or deductibles that are required as part of your health insurance. We DO NOT discount those bills.

Find out if you qualify for any of these discounts by using this screening tool.

*If you qualify for a financial assistance discount, you will never pay more than what the average insurance company would pay. Discount rates are reassessed annually and may change.

Payment Plans

You may set up a zero interest monthly payment plan for any bill, even a bill for a health insurance co-payment, co-insurance, or deductible. Payment plans are limited to terms of 1 year for balances up to $1,000 and two years for balances over $1,000.

You can now set up monthly payment plans in Partners Patient Gateway.
